Jam (but no Jerusalem)

I had my first day off of the summer on Friday, and was determined to do something interesting with the kids. My boss gave me a great idea – strawberry picking, followed by jam making. The weather was kind, so off we went….

The PYO place was a bit of a drive from home, but it looked like there was more than just fruit picking to be done. The kids liked playing in the park, and loved meeting the animals too. In particular, they loved the pigs & goats…..

….until one of the pigs shook mud all over them! Sam got particularly splattered….

Once they’d decided to move on from the animals, we hit the picking area. Lots of strawberries fell into our baskets…….

But we found cherries and blackcurrants too……..

We even collected eggs from the hen house – just two, I think we were a bit late to get the main lay of the day.

Fast forward to Saturday, and the jam making.

Amy enjoyed smashing up the strawberries….

We used jam sugar, as I wanted to make sure we had jam and not juice!

The smell when the fruit was boiling was gorgeous……

Filling the sterilised jars was a very messy business

But we’re very happy with the results!

Jam is best appreciated on scones, so the next step was some home baking……

You can tell this was well planned – Tesco delivered us some clotted cream in our weekly shop this morning. All I can say is that it’s a good job we cycled with the kids today – scone, jam and cream is VERY naughty (but very nice :)).
